When I first started my soy candle business, I started out by making my own soy candles. It took lots of time and testing, but I was able to make soy jar candles that looked good and had a good scent throw. But now I exclusively buy soy candles wholesale, and have stopped making my own.

What Should I Look For in a Wholesale Candle Company?

Here is a list of things to check before you decide on a company that you want to buy soy candles wholesale from:

• make sure the candles are made with 100% soy and/or vegetable wax if that's what you plan on selling.
• cotton wicks are best for health and the environment, and the label should say "lead-free."
• for best scent throw, the wax should be scented, not just the wick.
• the candles should have "safety cautions" or "usage instructions" somewhere on the labeling.
• does the company have a large variety of scents and types of candles available?
• is there a return policy if candles arrive broken or are unacceptable for some reason?
• look for companies that don't have a large minimum order requirement.
• is there an actual person you can talk to if you have questions or concerns?

Then, when you open that package, what's your first impression? Is it a pretty candle - is the color good? What does the surface of the candle look like? Is it smooth, or lumpy and bumpy? Is the wick in the center, or crooked? Examine the label. Does the label fit the "feel" of the company name? Are usage or safety instructions easily located?

Then, light it and set it where you normally would. As it burns, watch how the wax melts. Does it burn evenly and cleanly across the whole top of the candle, or does it tunnel down the wick? How does it smell? Can you smell it as you move away, or do you need to be on top of it in order to smell it?

When you find a candle company that passes your test to buy soy candles wholesale from, then you can contact them about buying soy candles from them, and feel great about your decision.

What Do I Need to Do to Be Able to Buy at Wholesale Prices?

For the most part, before you can legally purchase any merchandise at wholesale you'll need a reseller's license or tax id number. This can be obtained for free from the IRS. Find your state's Department of Revenue here. It allows you to buy at wholesale without paying income tax at the time of purchase, but means you must collect that sales tax when you sell the candles to your customers. You'll then need to file quarterly income taxes, whether or not you've sold anything in that tax quarter. If you've sold anything and collected that tax, then you'll need to send it in to your State. But don't worry - this is actually quite easy to do once you've done it a time or two.

Once you have your tax id number, you can buy all of your candles, candle supplies, accessories, and anything else you need for your business tax-free and at wholesale.
