Ready To Start a Candle Home Business?

Okay, so you're ready to leap into your candle home business. You've done your research, filed all of your paperwork, and you're ready to go. This is a really exciting time for you and your business. Now take a deep breath and step back - let's take a minute to make sure you're really in the right mind-set to take on the challenge of starting a candle business.

At this point, it's time to ask yourself a question. And you are the only one who can answer this question, because it reaches down into your "WHY"- why do you want to run your own candle home business? As you think about your answer, try not to just give a superficial, surface answer. Really dig deep down - get to the real reason. The deeper, and more true, your answer is, the more focused you'll be as you work on your home based business.

There are probably as many answers to the "why" question as there are people who start their own business. It may appear that a candle home business will be the answer to your dream - and it very well may be. But working at home has its own set of challenges.

If your business is your main source of income, that can raise your stress level, since the survival of the business and how well it does becomes your single focus. If you have another job, it may be best to keep working for a while and run your candle business on a part-time business. That way you can pour all of your earnings right back into your business, and it will build quicker.

Are you ready to share your home with your business? If you're making your own candles, supplies and stock will quickly take up lots of room, as will inventory if you're buying wholesale and reselling. Your candle home business should be treated as something separate from your home, even though it may be in your home.

If at all possible, try not to have your business based in a "public" room such as the kitchen or bedroom. You may have to make candles in your kitchen, but the other aspects of your business should be in a space where you can feel professional and businesslike.

And it's not just a space issue. Since your work is in your home, do you have the discipline to deal with all of the distractions that will pop up and stay true to your work schedule? If your business is to be a success, it's important that you set hours for yourself and stick firmly to them, whether you're running your candle home business full-time or part-time.

On the flip side of that, don't be tempted to run to answer that phone or design your newest scent combination after your work hours are over. You need some down-time, and your family will appreciate it and not resent your business.

An issue that many people don't think about until they're well into a home based business is this - will you be able to work on your own? If you're used to working in an office or some other environment with lots of people around, it may be a rude awakening to suddenly have only yourself to talk to. You'll need someone to bounce ideas off of, or to give you support and encouragement if things aren't going well.

One way around this is to join other business communities, such as your local Chamber of Commerce or home-based business group. If you're making your own candles, perhaps there's a local Craft Guild you can join. Even if you're not hand-producing your candles, if you sell at craft fairs or expos it's fun to network with some of the other vendors. Plus there's always the internet! Just because you're working at home doesn't mean you have to be working in isolation.

I'm not bringing these issues to your attention to make you second-guess your decision or to scare you ... on the contrary, your awareness of and attention to these matters will increase your focus and dedication to your candle home business. Once you've gotten the "housekeeping details" out of the way, you can focus on growing your business.
