Richly Scented Candles
An Affordable Luxury
Lighting, music, great food and richly scented candles. When you see or hear those words, what's the first thing
you think of? Many of us tend to think of a party, or some sort of gathering or celebration. Candles have become
an integral part of our lives and are often included in our biggest events.
I've had many people just starting out in the candle business ask me how in the world they can sell their candles
for the price they need to make a profit when there are so many cheap candles out there. After all, anyone can go to
Wal-Mart or the Dollar Store and buy a large jar candle for as little as $3. I don't know a single chandler who can
afford to sell a candle at that price, not if they want to stay in business. "How can I compete with those prices?"
they ask me.
My answer to them is, "You don't need to compete with those prices or stores." Sure, there'll always be people who
only want (or perhaps need) the cheapest version of anything. But there are more people who are willing to
purchase better or best quality products, whether they be candles or cars. After all, how many times have you heard the old adage "you get what you pay for?" That's true of candles as well as anything else.
Now with that being said, richly scented candles are the type of item that people will buy simply because they want them. They are a luxury item, but are also very commonly purchased. People want gourmet, richly scented candles for decorating their homes, for weddings, for celebrations, dinner parties, baby showers ... for any time that they want that little extra bit of indulgence, luxury and atmosphere.
Selling Richly-Scented Candles
Do you see where I'm heading with this? When you're developing the marketing plan for your soy candles, it's important to focus on your target market. Who do you want to be the people that are buying your candles? Most likely, it's not going to be the Dollar Store candle shoppers (not putting down Dollar Stores here - I go to ours at least twice a month to check for great finds). So you'll focus your marketing efforts on the people who can afford and will buy your richly scented candles.
This applies whether you're making your own candles or buying your candles wholesale. When you make your own soy candles, you can price them yourself based on your materials and overhead. If you buy your candles wholesale, often there will be a "suggested retail price" that comes with them, but it's only that - a suggestion. You can still set your own prices, for the most part with most companies.
So price your candles accordingly. If you live in an upscale neighborhood, you can realistically expect to get a higher price for your candles than if you live in a less expensive area. Your packaging (if you produce your own) and advertising will all reflect back to the market that you're targeting.
Of course, you're not limited to one price for your soy candles. You can sell candles in different sizes, in different containers, and different types altogether to hit different price points. Someone may not be able or willing to pay for your 24 oz. balmoral jar candle, but will purchase your 4 oz. tin container candle. The more products in your line, the more varieties of people within your target market will be able to buy your richly scented candles. And often, those who buy some of your less expensive products will love them so much they come back to buy more!
The line of richly scented candles that I sell is one that I'm very proud of. They are 100% vegetable wax, totally clean-burning when burned properly, and triple-scented for an aroma that lasts until the last bit of wax is gone. If you're looking for a great line of soy candles to sell, feel free to contact me here and I'll be happy to let you in on my secret. I have no problem selling these high-end candles in my very rural area.
If you'd like to try one of these great candles for yourself first, go to my online store and give one a try. I guarantee you'll be impressed!
